Many homeowners run into these questions when they have inherited a property, or paid off the mortgage, or when they receive a notice from the county saying there is a tax delinquency and their home is going to be auctioned!

Property taxes accrue on each residential and commercial property in your county. The property taxes are used to pay for things like road maintenance, sewer repair, and local school buildings. Usually these property taxes are paid through an escrow account with your mortgage company, meaning that most homeowners aren't aware how much they're paying in property taxes, or how the process works.

Property taxes are typically collected by the county twice a year--in the Spring and in the Fall. The property tax amount is based on the assessed value of your home, and your local tax rates, bonds and levies.

Unpaid property taxes will result in a tax delinquency. If the delinquency is not handled and paid, your home will be auctioned and sold to the highest bidder.
